SUMMARY:Seminar at the New Centre
DESCRIPTION:Our seminar titled\, Prototyping Para-Institutional\, will address para-institutions which emerged in the cultural field in response to major events such as the 2008 financial crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic\, indicating a demand for knowledge production that engaged with critical socio-political junctures. These responses were often informal\, fugitive\, and fleeting. While structurelessness was a feature\, sustaining these efforts over time proved challenging. If sustainability was achieved\, it was through partnerships with established institutions\, private patronage\, or through public funding. This workshop will begin by defining para-institutions: what is the institutionality that it operates beside\, beyond\, or against? We will look at the historical forces that once bound cultural institutions to an international order—a system that’s now unraveling through multipolarity and an ascendant right-wing. The faltering of once durable cultural institutions has been met by a multitude assembling and dispersing across online platforms. This short history will be reviewed and notable examples highlighted. Guests include Jürgen Bock\, Director of the Maumaus Independent Study Programme (Lisbon)\, and Renzo Martens with members of the Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise (CATPC).

SUMMARY:Exhibition at D21\, Leipzig
DESCRIPTION:Artists  Tekla Aslanishvili\, Tega Brain & Sam Lavigne\, Mia Heidler\, Sonja Hornung & Daniele Tognozzi\, João Enxuto & Erica Love\, Sybille Neumeyer\, Oliver Ressler\, Stefania Smolkina\, open-weather / Soph Dyer & Sasha Engelmann \n\n\n\nCurated by  Sybille Neumeyer \n\n\n\n”Teleconnections“ is a term used in climate science to describe causal relationships between far distant climate zones. Beyond a merely meteorological perspective\, the exhibition puts into discourse the correlations between climates\, media and politics. \n\n\n\nPolitical\, cultural and social atmospheres are shaped by the influence of the media\, and technologically produced climate narratives (re)produce power relations. In addition to topics such as greenwashing\, media as catalysts of CO2 cycles\, colonial data structures\, activism and energy infrastructures\, the multimedia contributions of the international artists deal with eco-feminist\, speculative and poetic approaches. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition will be accompanied by a discourse programme of workshops\, lectures and guided tours.

SUMMARY:Essay in Whitechapel: Documents of Contemporary Art series on Speculation
DESCRIPTION:Our essay “Sketches from a Secession” will be published by MIT Press for the Whitechapel: Documents of Contemporary Art series Speculation edited by Marina Vishmidt. \n\n\n\nEngaging with the question of speculation in ways that encompass the artistic\, the economic\, and the philosophical\, with excursions into the literary and the scientific\, this collection approaches the theme as a powerful logic of contemporary life whose key instantiations are art and finance. …In this context\, the artist is seen as a speculative subject and a paragon of creativity—the diametrical opposite of the bean-counter obsessed with balance sheets and value added. However\, once social reality becomes speculative and opaque in its own right—risky\, algorithmic\, and overhauled by networked markets—what becomes of the distinction between not just art and finance but art and life?

SUMMARY:Essay "The Currency of Contemporary Art" published by Sternberg Press
DESCRIPTION:Our essay “The Currency of Contemporary Art” will be published by Sternberg Press for the book Between the Material and the Possible: Infrastructural Re-examination and Speculation in Art edited by Bassam El Baroni. From questions around space settlements to the possibility of repurposing blockchain infrastructures and financial instruments for redistributive purposes\, and from the diagrammatic potential of infrastructural thinking in artistic practices to scenario planning and economic strategizing\, this collection of essays brings together critical analysis from a broad group of contributors engaged in the revisioning of our infrastructural futures. Their interrogations span local and global relationalities\, historical and political legacies\, as well as future-oriented infrastructural hypotheses.

SUMMARY:Exhibition at the Palazzo De Gualtieris\, Castrignano de’ Greci\, Italy
DESCRIPTION:Our work will be exhibited at the Palazzo De Gualtieris\, Castrignano de’ Greci (Lecce)\, Italy for Home Sweet Home curated by Paolo Mele\, Claudio Zecchi\, Alessandra Pioselli\, Davide Quadrio. \n\n\n\n“Lastation is dead! Long live Lastation” was the last shout with which we left the house that hosted us for six years from 2014 to 2020. Lastation\, literally the house of the former stationmaster of the last still functional train station in the southeast of Italy\, has always been a place of hospitality\, debate\, research\, and cultural production for artists\, curators\, researchers\, or simple enthusiasts who have come to visit us over time. Home Sweet Home is an agora\, a place where the projects and artists presented become interwoven\, a place of dialectic and discoveries. The exhibition\, which will see the participation of national and international artists and projects\, will open on July 22nd\, 2021 and will not have a scheduled closing date. It will occupy the entire space of Palazzo De Gualieris from the exhibition rooms to the offices\, from the studios of the artists in residence to the bar via the library and the garden.

DESCRIPTION:ESAP Seminar: Rerouting Capital \n\n\n\nJuly 14 – 16\, 2021 \n\n\n\nThrough a critical analysis of the art world’s global infrastructure\, this seminar looks at artistic methodologies which operationalize financial speculation to creatively redirect flows of capital. We will focus on long-term (affective and research-based) commitments by artists and communities who have recognized that undoing structural violence and systemic inequality requires risking together to build meaningful futures. \n\n\n\nhttp://www.esap.pt/
